UMBC Flag-football Tournament, Picnic, & BBQ

This semester the UMBC MSA will be hosting the biannual Football Tournament. The tournament will be held on April 24, 2010 on UMBC's Erickson Field. There will also be a concurrent barbecue and inter-MSA sisters' picnic, Insha'Allah. These three big inter-MSA events will all be focused on raising funds for Muslimat Al Nisaa, a Muslim woman's shelter that is in need of such types of fund-raisers and awareness campaigns. We would like to invite the MSA at John Hopkins University, Towson University, and College Park to participate in these inter-MSA events. Below are more details about each of the three events,

*Flag-football Tournament.*
Begins at 10:30 am
In order to participate please have a minimum of 7 brothers on your team. If you need more players please contact Br. Abubakr or Br. Yousuf and arrangements can be made Insha'Allah.
Each team may have a maximum of 14 players with a maximum of 7 players on the field.
Their will be a registration fee of $6.00 per player.
The winning teams will be awarded a trophy, Insha'Allah.

*Sisters' Picnic at Erickson Field*
Begins at 11:30am
This is an Inter-MSA sisters' event.
Participation is free, but food will cost $6.00 per person.

*MSA-BBQ
*Begins at 12:00pm
Food will cost $6.00 per person.
(for those who have paid the player registration fee or the picnic fee,
the BBQ fee will not be charged.)

Even though we are charging fees, none of the proceeding will be going into our MSA account. Everything we make will be going towards Muslimat Al-Nissa. So even if you don't like football, barbecues or picnics, please come to support our sisters at the shelter and encourage others in your MSA to do so as well. If you would like to donate more than your $6.00 fee or learn about other ways to assist the shelter, you will also be able to do that at this event. This is also a great opportunity to strengthen our bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood, and to ensure future inter-MSA event like this, Insha'Allah.

We will be sending out more information as it becomes available, including a flier to email to the members of your MSA.

Islamic Awareness Week 2010 is only ONE week away! The UMBC Muslim Student Association invites YOU to learn about Islam, the way of life of a quarter of the worlds population! We welcome you to bring your friends and professors to each event planned for every day of the week. Mark your calendars for a week of gaining knowledge and meeting people with great insight, filled with love for humanity and unity across the world.

Tuesday April 6th, 2010- Open Exhibition- Commons Mainstreet- 11 am to 2 pm

Wednesday April 7th, 2010- Hijab Live! - Commons Mainstreet- 11 am to 2 pm

Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAWW)

Sheikh Imran, imam of the Islamic Society of Baltimore, will be speaking on the life of the Beloved Prophet (PBUH) on Wednesday, March 10. The lecture will take place in the Inter-Faith Center at 4:00 p.m.

We are in the month of Rabi-ul Awal, the month in which the Prophet (PBUH) was born, and this event will insha Allah serve as a reminder of his legacy.

Please attend and bring your friends as well.

2010 MSA GET-TOGETHER

As-salamu Alaykum Everyone.

It's that time of the year again. MSA wants to hear from you. Come and let us know what you think of us. Good or bad, its your chance to let us have it.

Ok so all jokes aside, this is one of the most important events for MSA. We are on campus to serve you guys and no one else can tell us about your needs and desires except you guys yourself.

No need to get scared from the bearded men of our cabinet, we are students just like you. We too eat three times a day and skip classes like there nothing :)

Mark your calenders and write it down on a sticky note and paste it on your door. All are welcome. Tell your friends and buddies. We will be waiting for you.

O and it goes without saying that we will be serving lunch during the meeting. Trust me, we wont let you leave with an empty stomach :)

Divine Speech: Literary Characteristics of the Qur'an

This single weekend seminar brings to light the literary marvel and subtlety of the Qur’an to English speaking audiences. Attendees need not have background in the Arabic language. The seminar comprises a series of discussions on literary issues pertaining to the Qur’an that are difficult to capture in translation such as the placement of Qur’anic stories, repetition, alleged grammatical errors, coherence and transitions from subject to subject, and more.

UMBC Fast-A-Thon '09

In the Name of God, Most Compassionate, Most MercifulIn the spirit of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, UMBC-MSA wants you to fast for one day: Sept 16th. No food, no water. From sunrise to sunset, all for the cause of fighting hunger.
We urge everyone to donate as much money as they can and help us in making our community a hunger free zone. All donations will be sent to one of the local charities.
People from all faiths and religions are invited to this event.
At sunset on Sept 16th, we will host dinner to break your fast for FREE. Even if you do not pledge to fast, you are still invited to east with us. Last year, over three hundred people showed up and this year we hope to make it even bigger insha-ALLAH.
We urge everyone to donate as much as they can and help us in making our community a hunger free zone. Please attend this event and invite as many people as possible.

Ramadan '09 Woohoooo!!!!

Asslaamu Alaikum,
We hope that you are all enjoying the last days of summer before the semester begins. As you know, the fall semester will begin in the middle of Ramadan. Insha-Allah, the UMBC MSA will host iftars on campus from the first day of school (Tuesday, September 1st) until the end of Ramadan on every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. If you wish to sponsor an Iftar, you can do so by filling out an online form that is available at http://www.umbcmsa.org/iftar-sign-up/ and will be sent out on the UMBA MSA Mailing list. Please read the Iftar Sign-up Rules before signing up to sponsor an iftar.
